Immigration and Asylum Law Accreditation: Casework Assistant Exam (Monday 16 March 2026)

Candidates will be tested on their awareness, knowledge and understanding of law, policy and procedure arising from the syllabus set out in the Immigration & Asylum Accreditation Candidates’ Guidance.

Candidates are expected to know what sources of law, policy and procedure apply to the area of the syllabus, in which they are being tested, and be able to look at those authorities to find answers to questions.

The syllabus is confined to work that can be conducted under an Immigration Legal Aid contract and comprises:-

1. Legal Aid
2. Professional Conduct
3. Drafting and English
4. Legal Practice
5. Specialist Immigration Practice
6. Appeal and Administrative Review
7. Deportation and Removal
8. Judicial Review
9. Human Rights
10. Asylum support
11. Detention

The expected standards are designed to reflect the issues encountered by practitioners and ensure that accredited members are able to deliver good quality advice and representation.

Candidates have 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete the examination, which consists of 100 marks separated into four parts. In order to pass the examination you must achieve a mark of at least 50%. If your time expires the examination will submit automatically.

Casework Assistants who have passed the exam:

• can conduct tasks delegated by Senior Caseworkers from their own caseload, except in reserved matters;
• cannot have conduct of cases or matters.

Delegated tasks are supervised by, and remain the responsibility of, the Senior Caseworker who has conduct of the matter.

The LAA has confirmed that tasks in controlled legal representation (CLR) matters can be delegated to Casework Assistants, provided the matter or task is not reserved.
