Vulnerable Clients: Recognising and Acting on Suspected Abuse

Do you feel confident that you can always recognise when a vulnerable client is being abused or exploited?

Any client can be vulnerable, and solicitors have a regulatory obligation towards vulnerable clients. Moreover, the SRA believes that people needing legal services are at an increased risk of vulnerability and that this can be heightened during the process of engaging with the legal system. All solicitors must understand how to recognise vulnerability in clients and know what action to take if they suspect that an individual is being mistreated by someone else.

Written by Fiona Heald, a senior lawyer in the Court of Protection, this course explains what client vulnerability means and outlines the steps you can take to find out if someone is vulnerable. In easy-to-understand chapters, this course highlights possible indicators that a vulnerable client may be being abused or exploited and gives practical guidance about how to gauge client vulnerability throughout the duration of the retainer. The course also explores issues of mental capacity, confidentiality, the Office of the Public Guardian and how to make an application to the Court of Protection.

Whether you’re a new or experienced practitioner who engages in client-facing work, this course will have something for you. Enrol now to update your skills in this vital area of client care.
