The Judicial Competencies: Completing the application form – Training for solicitors (Tuesday 10 February 2026)

This online workshop is aimed at solicitors considering a judicial role. If you have struggled with evidencing your potential for a judicial role in writing, then this training will equip you with the skills required to compile the competencies section of the Judicial Appointments Commission’s (JAC) application form.

This intensive workshop will focus on tailoring your submission to make a positive impact at the JAC’s competency-based application stage of the process. The session will provide practical advice on developing your examples of achievement in a group coaching format, incorporating your experiences, you will receive invaluable feedback from your fellow learners and the trainer/facilitator.

To help you get the most out of this workshop, it is essential that you set aside approximately one hour to complete the pre-work.

This workshop will be facilitated by Manjula Bray, a business psychologist, facilitator and coach. As a former JAC lay assessor panel member Manjula has unique insight into the qualities sought for judicial appointment.

Join us for this interactive workshop to help you strengthen your judicial application. This training will also be useful for the interview and other competency-based selection processes such as public appointments.

Learning outcomes

During this online workshop, you will:

  • Develop familiarisation with the JAC competencies – what they are, why, and how they are used in candidate assessment
  • Utilise an efficient methodology to record a long-list of examples for the competency-based application form
  • Be able to reflect on and assess the suitability of generated examples, for their inclusion in the JAC form
  • Structure your examples of achievement in the required Situation, Obstacle, Action, and Result  (SOAR) format
  • Revise your draft content to maximise the alignment and impact of your competencies
  • Edit your draft to develop examples succinctly so that they adhere to set wordcount limits
