Nicola Burgess is an IAAS Level 2 accredited caseworker and supervisor with over 14 years’ experience working in immigration and asylum law.
Nicola has a particular interest in legal aid work and assisting the most vulnerable, including victims of torture, those with mental health issues, and victims of trafficking.
She has developed considerable expertise in representing foreign national prisoners in challenging their deportation and securing their release from detention. Nicola regularly secures damages on behalf of her clients who have been found to be unlawfully detained. She routinely acts for clients in the higher courts, including the European Court of Human Rights.
Nicola is the Legal Director at the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI). JCWI has campaigned for the rights of migrants for over 50 years. JCWI’s legal department were recognised as Legal Aid Team of the Year at the 2020 Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Awards.
