Risk and Compliance Advanced Accreditation (Legal Practice – focus on Solicitors Accounts Rules) Exam Preparation Training (15 September 2022)
This intensive half-day course has been developed to support you in preparing for the examinations for the Risk and Compliance Advanced (Legal Practice) Accreditation scheme. The half day session will focus on Solicitors Accounts Rules.
The Risk and Compliance Advanced Accreditation in Legal Practice is a quality standard for legal professionals managing risk and compliance in a legal practice or department. By holding the accreditation, you will demonstrate that you have risk and compliance technical skills. You will also be able to convey to stakeholders and prospective clients that you have:
- demonstrated your knowledge and skill; and
- attained an objective quality mark at a particular level of competence in these areas
The Risk and Compliance Advanced Accreditation (Legal Practice) examination is targeted at those who have expertise in Legal Practice Management.
The half-day course will be delivered in a virtual classroom format by Cary Whitmarsh, Head of Risk at international law firm Trowers & Hamlins. It will run on 15 September 2022, from 9.30am to 1pm.

Required prior knowledge
You’ll be expected to have an awareness, knowledge and understanding of law, policy and procedure arising from risk and compliance law and to be a current practitioner. The course content and materials are designed to reinforce your knowledge and understanding to enable you to seek accreditation following the successful completion of the Risk and Compliance Accreditation examinations at Advanced (Legal Practice) level.
This training is designed for those with risk and compliance skills and knowledge needed within a business and/or practice role. It will focus specifically on Solicitors Accounts Rules and will be of interest to:
- directors of risk
- compliance officers for legal practice (COLPs)
- sole practitioners
- compliance officers for finance and administration (COFAs)
SRA competence: +1 more for SRA competence: A1, A2
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Distinguish between client money and office money
- Identify relevant regulatory requirements to ensure compliance with SRA Accounts Rules
- Apply good banking protocols in practice
- Demonstrate enhanced knowledge of financial and accounting reports
- Communicate and train relevant colleagues on Accounts Rules
What this will cover
The course is designed to enable you to gain an understanding and competence of risk and compliance legal practice law. It applies a holistic, ethics-based and strategic approach to legal practice risk management. The training will provide an opportunity to recap on the fundamentals of the subject, revisiting relevant topic areas from the Foundation level syllabus before delving into topics from the Advanced Legal Practice syllabus. This is aimed to contextualise the training, enhancing your opportunity for learning and your understanding of key concepts in preparation for the examination.
The session will cover:
- Review and recap of Solicitors Accounts Rules and financial crime; and
- Solicitors Accounts Rules and interest on client accounts

How you will learn
The course will be delivered through interactive teaching and learning in a virtual classroom-type format. You’ll be taking part in exercises, case studies and quizzes to enable you to embed your learning in preparation for the Risk and Compliance Accreditation examination in Advanced Legal Practice level.
You’ll will be provided with a copy of the PowerPoint slide deck presented by the trainer, and a manual featuring the most up-to-date legislation applicable to Solicitors Accounts Rules in the context of the management of risk and compliance in legal practice.
