This intensive one-day course has been developed to support you in preparing for the examination for the Risk and Compliance Advanced Accreditation scheme in Anti-Money Laundering.

The Risk and Compliance Advanced Accreditation in Anti-Money Laundering is a quality standard for legal professionals responsible for anti-money laundering in a legal practice or department. By holding the accreditation, you will demonstrate that you have technical skills in anti-money laundering. You will also be able to convey to stakeholders and prospective clients that you have:

  • demonstrated your knowledge and skill; and
  • attained an objective quality mark at a particular level of competence in these areas.

The Risk and Compliance Advanced Accreditation (Anti-Money Laundering) examination is targeted at those who have expertise in anti-money laundering.

The course will be delivered over one day in a virtual classroom format by Laurence Howland, Director, Risk and Compliance of Buckles Solicitors LLP, who has overall responsibility for the firm’s anti-money laundering and regulatory compliance. It will run on 14 September 2022, from 9.30am to 5pm.

Required prior knowledge

You will be expected to have an understanding of the AML regulations and be responsible for AML, financial crime and fraud regulatory and compliance obligations within a practice or department. The course content and materials are designed to reinforce your knowledge and understanding to enable you to seek accreditation following the successful completion of the Risk and Compliance Advanced Accreditation examination in Anti-Money Laundering.

This training is designed for those with expertise in anti-money laundering and will cover a wide range of key risk areas in a legal practice, including how these are mitigated and managed. The training is relevant for the following roles:

  • money laundering reporting officers (MLROs)
  • money laundering compliance officers (MLCOs)
  • consultants
  • sole practitioners
  • COFAs

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Articulate the risk of property and mortgage fraud and current threats and methodologies used by criminals
  • Identify the key legislation relating to money laundering, terrorist financing and financial crime and the regulatory framework underpinning financial crime risk management
  • Describe common methods of money laundering and terrorist financing and the role of professional enablers within the legal and financial services industry in facilitating financial crime
  • Draft a Firm Wide Risk Assessment (FWRA) and Policies, Controls and Procedures for effective management of AML/CFT, property and mortgage fraud and related financial crime risk
  • Prepare and submit a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR), a Defence Against Money Laundering (DAML) SAR and a report on suspected breach of sanctions and explain your responsibilities in respect of each of these processes

You will be provided with a copy of the PowerPoint presentations and a manual featuring the most up-to-date legislation applicable to the management of anti-money laundering in a legal practice or department. Additional resources will be signposted throughout the course to enable you to maximise additional self-guided learning.
