Disability Equality: Improving the Experience of Disabled Colleagues and Applicants (24/05/2022)
It is important to be mindful that improving accessibility also needs to focus on removing institutional and attitudinal barriers, not just physical ones.
This interactive and thought-provoking training will demonstrate how negative attitudes can potentially be incredibly damaging to disabled people, but they are often very entrenched and difficult to change. Disability equality training is a highly effective way to challenge and meaningfully change these negative perceptions.
This live webinar, scheduled on Tuesday 24 May 2022 at 10:00-12:00, will support practitioners to fully understand and meet the needs of its workforce, potential employees as well as their disabled clients.
Karen Sullivan has worked in the field of disability equality for over twenty years as an Inclusion Manager and Special Needs Advisor in an educational context. She has designed and successfully delivered a wide-ranging training programme in the field of disability equality training to highly diverse audiences including headteachers, nursery owners, managers, teachers, parents/carers, childminders and early years practitioners.

After attendees the session, attendees will:
- Gain a working knowledge of the social and medical models of disability and the core values and beliefs which underpin them.
- Recognise how language can unintentionally reinforce stereotypes and negative perceptions of disabled people.
- Reflect on how their firms’ core values and beliefs promote the development of inclusive working practices
- Understand employers’ responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 in relation to making reasonable adjustments for disabled colleagues.
What this will cover
This two-hour long interactive virtual session will cover the following:
- Overview of the key aspects of the social and medical models of disability.
- Consideration of respectful language – examining different ways to describe disability/impairment which are inclusive and reflect the social model of disability.
- Review of employers’ responsibilities under Equality Act 2010 with a focus on implementing reasonable adjustments in practice.
- Presentation of a business case for recruitment and retention of disabled staff.
